Kislovodsk - the pearl of the Russian South.

Kislovodsk is the southernmost and largest health resort in the area known as Caucasian Mineral Waters. The city of sunshine and curative springs Narzans is cosily situated in the majestic dale amidst northern hills of the Greater Caucasus at the altitude of 800-1000 m. above sea level.

Warm summer, mild winter, the abundance of sunshine, the clean mountain air and the medicinal mineral waters create exceptionally favourable conditions for spa treatment in Kislovodsk any time of the year. Cardiovascular diseases, diseases of respiratory organs, nervous system disorders and concomitant illnesses are successfully treated here. Summer in Kislovodsk is not hot and lasts almost 5 months. The average temperature of July - August is +19°C. Dry sunny weather lasts till November. Winter is moderately mild and dry, the coldest days are in January (-4°C). The Indian summer is long, warm, windless and dry. Relative humidity varies from 56% to 65%. More than 300 days yearly are sunny. The total amount of sunshine hours in the year in Kislovodsk is more than in Davos, Saint Morits, Montreux, the famous resorts of the Western Europe.

The mountains surrounding the Kislovodsk valley on all sides prevent penetration of both the cold eastern and northern winds which bring mists, drizzling rains and hoar froast in winter and the dry sultry winds blowing in summer from Stavropol steppes and from the Caspian lowlands.

Kislovodsk has been visited by many distinguished figures in science, literature and art. There are several interesting museums in the city famous not only in Russia. The great poets Pushkin and Lermontov were the first to describe in their works this romantic beauty spot in the Caucasus. 'Love affairs that begin at the foot of Mashuk reach happy ending here,' Lermontov wrote.

The Big Concert Hall of the State Philharmonia has been the centre of the theatrical and musical life since 1896. Triumphant appearances were made on its stage by Fyodor Shaliapin, Leonid Sobinov, Antonina Nezhdanova, Vera Komissarzhevskaya, Konstantin Varlamov and Vasily Kachalov. The public saw performances by Anna Pavlova, Isadora Duncan, Yekaterina Geltser, Matilda Kseshinskaya and many other distinguished musical and theatrical personalities.

Chekhov and Stanislavsky, Rakhmaninov, Prokofiev and Scriabin, Akhmatova and Mayakovsky were happy in Kislovodsk. No wonder that Kislovodsk was known as 'the summer capital of Russia'.

THE SPA PARK

The real pride of Kislovodsk is the Spa park. It was laid out by the soldiers of fortress in 1823 along the Olkhovka river. Today the territory of the park is more than 1500 hectares. And every tree and bush upon this vast territory was carefully planted by a human being. Shady groves, friendly glades and avenues have become not only a favourite place for relaxation, but a veritable museum of Caucasian flora. There are near 300 species of trees and shrubs representing the world's most varied climatic zones. The Caucasian beech stands next to the Amur cork tree and Siberian larch, the tender green of the birch mingles with the pale blue of the silver fir. All are inhabited by cheerful flocks of birds and funny sguirrels

The park is beautiful at any time of the year, but especially poetic in autumn, when the avenues are spread with a carpet of golden leaves and vivid purple tinges the clums of bushes. The air here is fresh and cool even on the hottest days.

The park is the real focus of life in Kislovodsk. It features prominently in the life of health resort treatment complex. The first and best terrainkur routs in Russia are going through the park. Their total length is over 80 km. With each step as you climb up, you can see a wider panorama of the city and its environs. But the best viewing point is near Olimpic complex at the height of 1200 m. above sea level. From here you can see as on the palm of your hand, the nevermelting snows and glaciers of the highest mountain in Russia Elbrus, the ridges of the ranges surrounding Kislovodsk and the city which nestles comfortably below.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND CURATIVE CHARACTERISTICS
OF KISLOVODSK MINERAL WATER NARZAN

Due to the chemical composition the water of Kislovodsk mineral springs is referred to as cold carbonic hydrocarbonate-sulphate-calcium-magnasium-natrium mineral water. The degree of mineralization ranges from 2,5 to 6,0 grams per litre in different springs. The water circulating inside the lowest parts of the sedimentary rocks contains more sulphates. That is why the water is called sulphate Narzan. The water rising through underground passages and cracks to upper levels of sedimentary rocks obtains somewhat another composition and is called dolomite Narzan.

NARZAN BATHS

Narzan baths taken with other kinds of medical treatment considerably improve the functional condition of the cardiovascular system, increase its adaptational qualities, profoundly influence the central nervous system and normalize the process of metabolism.

The main factors influencing the effectiveness of Narzan baths are chemical composition, the degree of hydrostatic pressure in the bath, temperature of the water, duration of staying in the bath. All these factors are taken into account by the specialists of the Spa-hotel and vary in accordance with the needs of the individual patient. The typological features of the superior nervous activities, kind of disease, the stage of its development, the condition of cardiovascular system, its adaptational abilities and other peculiarities of every patient individually are taken into consideration.

The Narzan bath acts upon the patient with the combined effects of its physical and chemical characteristics as one remedy.

NARZAN DRINKING
AS A TYPE OF MEDICAL TREATMENT.

The dolomite and sulphate Narzans should be taken by physician's prescriptions. Both are taken in cases of cardiovascular system and alimentary canal diseases.

The dolomite Narzan should be taken in case of metabolism disturbances, obesity, diabetes, mellitus, gout, chronic diseases of urine excretion passages, stomach diseases. This type of water improves the metabolism, urinary excretion and stimulates the excretion of waste products.

The sulphate Narzan stimulates stomach secretion, helps to improve digestion, improves bile excretion function of liver, decreases an abdomen swelling, regulates intestine functions. It may be prescribed to those suffering from catarrh of stomach, decreased acidity, liver and gall bladder disturbances.

INHALATIONS

The inhalation therapy is used for treatment of patients with diseases of upper respiratory tract: rhinitis; pharyngitis; subtrophy, atrophic and hypotrophic laryngities; ozena; tracheitis; tonsillitis and functional diseases of upper respiratory tract. The curative effect of inhalation is reached due to the influence of the gas and salt components of mineral water, humid warmth. Sprayed mineral water when inhaled influences the respiratory tract.

At Spa-hotel 'Tselebny Narzan' they use warm alkaline (narzan) inhalation during which the water of mineral springs warmed up to 38 - 40°C is sprayed. Medicinal, herbaceous and oil inhalations are also available.

MEDICINAL SHOWERS
(Charcot's, fan, whirlpool underwater massage)

Medicinal showers combined with curative effects of the environment improve the activity of nervous and cardiovascular systems, the metabolic process, and the endocrine glands. Medicinal showers are used not only for curative purposes but also to toughen up and strengthen the muscles.
